"How does one end up going from Med School to owning a clothing line?" was the first question I asked Shawn Kaleka when I met up with him on his short trip to NYC en route to Paris. Medicine was just not his calling he said. We talked about everything from Indian parents to blogging to McQueen to NYFW to our love for animation and having happy things in our spaces. There were moments when we spoke the same sentence at the same time! This is called true love I tell you..hehe

Shawn is a fellow Vogue India blogger, a perfect fashionista, the owner of Costume Dept. and a total sweetheart.

Proud as a Peacock: Personal Fashion

Ofcourse the biggest news of the past weekend has been that the NY State legalized same sex marriages. That along with the Pride Parade on Sunday was definitely one of the most historic times in NYC. I don’t know why for the love of God I did not think about doing this shoot in the parade!! I thought about the idea entirely after I was done with the shoot at Grand Central terminal. Oh well. Nonetheless, congratulations to all the gay people in NY. It was a long time coming and I am proud to be a New Yorker where equality always prevails.

Ok so about my outfit. It’s really not an outfit. It is just some chiffon material I draped around my body over a skirt [which I got tailored in India a million years ago]. But all that henna art you see on my leg and shoulder is the fabulous work of my friend Hetal Somaya. I have wanted to incorporate henna in a shoot for months and ofcourse even though I love the traditional Indian and Arabic henna art; I wanted to do something different. So on the leg we ended up doing a creepy tree and on the shoulder we did a skeleton of a snake. Although by the time we actually shot the pictures a lot of the henna had come off and you can’t really see the skull of the snake or some of the tree, I think overall we just had a really good time experimenting.

Thanks again Hetal. For waking up early and breaking your back doing the henna just to amuse my fantasy.

Cutoffs: Street Fashion

I am absolutely obsessing over Tachol's entire outfit. I love that dress with the cutoffs on the sides along with the jacket and the bag is so divine. From her hair to the red lipstick and shoes, i love it all.

Tachol is a stylist who just graduated from Parsons and is going to Thailand to work for Cosmopolitan Thailand. I am sure she will rock the world there. Good luck Tachol and stay fabulous always.

Introducing the DSM logo

DSM has been around for 1.5 years almost. But my obsession for Tamara Waakop Reijers' illustrations has been around for more than 2-3 years. I had printouts of her work all over my bed room wall way before DSM was even conceived. Her work makes me HAPPY!!! 

I had gotten in touch with her when I had first randomly stumbled upon her website 2-3 years ago. Told her I wish I could draw and illustrate like her. She sent me postcards and much love then. 

Then some months ago when I thought about getting good business cards printed for DSM I wanted to develop a logo for DSM too. I am soo obsessed with Tamara’s work that I had to ask her if she would let me use one of her images as a logo. Altough I couldn’t really use the same image as it was already her logo for years, she checked out DSM and decided she liked my work enough to help me develop my own logo for DSM. You know sometimes I feel I get lucky. Just sometimes. This is one of those times. I got my favorite illustrator/ artist in the world to design my logo for me!!!!

Spike Hike: Street Fashion

Ben is easily one of the sweetest people I have met on the street so far and quite evidently one of the most creative and original fashion personalities. I love the little details on his outfit with the leopard fringe gloves, the spiked hair and his bag belt. He is a model caster from London who's in NYC to caste models for the upcoming NY fashion week. I hope I see him around during fashion week.

Faceless Ghosts: Personal Fashion

Shooting with NURBS, we spotted this cool art on a door and were contemplating if we should use it as a backdrop.

ME: Oh I love it, can we use it please?

NURBS: Really?

Me: Why not? It’s beautiful. 3 women in abstract. And I love the colors

NURBS: They don’t have faces. They are ghosts!! And you don’t really know if they are women ghosts either. Anyone can dress up like women.

I won. But I wonder if the ghosts will haunt NURBS tonight? Lol.

Side Note: NURBS is a very simple, shy, conservative, Indian IT professional. I apparently *shock* him every time he comes to shoot me. hehe. I feel like I am kinda rubbing off on him with this comment.

This weekend seemed like the goth spring collection on the streets. Found a few cool black and pinks in perfect harmony for inspiration.

I am still rather sick so am taking it easy on personal fashion posts. Need to rest up. Oh but I did watch Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris" last night and have to say it was lovely, funny and quirky [as usual]. Do go check it out. I am sure it's better than Hangover 2.

PS: for people who've asked about the reaction to my red hair [back to normal now], Yes everyone at work was freaked out. But I didn't loose my job :) . Parents still don't know it happened. What happens in NYC stays in NYC and the internet ;-)
